Welcome to the Additive Manufacturing Village of the European Defence Agency: The European Gathering of Key Additive Manufacturing Players Serving the Armed Forces.
Under the auspices of Belgium's European presidency, the European Defence Agency (EDA), in cooperation with the Multinational Logistic Coordination Centre (MLCC), organized the "AM Village 2024" workshop in Tournai, Belgium, from May 13 to 17, 2024. This event brought together the main players in additive manufacturing (AM) to explore and demonstrate the capabilities of this technology in serving the armed forces.
The Importance of the AM Village
Additive manufacturing, already widely used in industry, is becoming a catalyst for military capabilities, whether for maintaining operational readiness of equipment (MRO) or for protecting forces, notably through the construction and reconstruction of infrastructures.
For the first time, the EDA, in collaboration with its partners and member states, organized the AM Village workshop in Ede, Netherlands. Over 240 participants from sixteen member states, the United States, and the United Kingdom, as well as twenty companies, academic institutions, and AM entities, attended this event. Unlike an exhibition, the AM Village is a workshop focusing on the application of additive manufacturing.
Constructions-3D at AM Village 2024
Constructions-3D had the privilege of being invited to this exceptional event to showcase the technology of 3D concrete printing in service of the armed forces. This workshop demonstrated how 3D concrete printing can play a crucial role in military applications.
Watch the recap video of the event:
Review of the Importance of 3D Concrete Printing for Military Applications
3D concrete printing offers innovative and efficient solutions for the construction of military infrastructures. Here are some specific advantages:
1. Speed and Operational Efficiency
3D concrete printing significantly reduces the time required to erect structures such as barracks, command posts, and protective shelters.
2. Flexibility and adaptability
This technology enables the creation of customized structures with organic shapes, tailored to the specific needs of each mission and local conditions, such as bridges, anti-tank barriers, or reinforced shelters.
3. Durability and resistance
3D printed concrete structures are designed to withstand small arms fire, explosions, and severe weather conditions, which is crucial for operations in conflict zones or hostile environments.
4. Cost and Resource Reduction
The use of 3D printing reduces the need for labor and materials and allows for the use of locally available materials, thereby minimizing logistical costs.
5. Humanitarian and reconstruction applications
Beyond military applications, 3D concrete printing can play a vital role in humanitarian efforts and post-conflict reconstruction by enabling the rapid construction of essential infrastructures such as hospitals, schools, and temporary housing.
The participation of Constructions-3D at AM Village 2024 highlighted the importance of technological innovation for the armed forces. 3D concrete printing, with its multiple advantages, represents a significant advancement in the protection and operational efficiency of the armed forces, while also offering sustainable humanitarian solutions.
