Educational revolution in construction: integrating 3D printing at Lycée François Mansart

At the forefront of educational innovation in the construction industry, Sylvain Pamart, Principal of Lycée François Mansart in Marly, discusses the transformative role of 3D printing in shaping a modern curriculum. Having led the school since September 2023, Sylvain Pamart has an extensive background in education, including twelve years as a mathematics teacher and eight years as the principal of Romain Rolland College in Waziers.

Introducing a new dimension to construction training

Under the direction of Sylvain Pamart, Lycée François Mansart has embraced the revolutionary potential of 3D printing in construction. Specializing in various building trades, the school has recently added a 3D concrete printing course to its curriculum, utilizing the MiniPrinter EDU provided by Constructions-3D.

When asked about the integration of this technology, Sylvain Pamart credits his predecessor and the enthusiasm of Antoine Motte from Constructions-3D for inspiring him to pursue this innovative path. This has enabled the school to not only keep pace with technology but also to anticipate the future needs of the construction industry.

The MiniPrinter EDU: a springboard to advanced capabilities

The decision to invest in the MiniPrinter EDU was strategic, aimed at introducing students to 3D printing in construction. This tool is seen as a first step, with hopes to upgrade to more advanced models that can further enhance student training and project capabilities.

The impact of 3D printing in construction education

Sylvain Pamart is a staunch advocate for the role of 3D printing in revolutionizing the construction industry, particularly in how it can transform traditional practices and meet modern demands. He believes the technology not only offers greater design freedom but also addresses environmental concerns through more efficient material use.

Vision for the future: reaching new heights

Looking ahead, Sylvain Pamart sees a significant shift towards the democratization of 3D printing in construction, envisioning a future where small-scale machines can be leased to SMEs and individuals for custom construction projects. This change would not only transform the landscape of professional construction but also make these advanced tools accessible to a broader audience.

Strengthening industry-education ties

The partnership with Constructions-3D has been crucial for equipping students with the skills needed for modern roles in construction. Sylvain Pamart's goal is to enhance employability through innovative training methods. The recent "open badge" certification is a testament to this, with six students already recognized for their newfound competencies in 3D construction, showing promising signs of enthusiasm and engagement.

"Seven students have obtained this "open badge" which validates the skills acquired, in accordance with a framework developed by the teachers and DDFPT of Lycée Blériot in Cambrai and Mansart in Marly. All were volunteers, attending additional sessions on Wednesday afternoons. Everyone is enthusiastic about this technique and its possibilities. Upon my arrival, thanks to the commitment of my deputy and the newly appointed DDFPT of the school, we approached Ms. Mykaj, the inspector, to formalize, in the form of an open badge associated with the BAC, the recognition of the competencies acquired by the students. In partnership with Lycée Bleriot of Cambrai, the teaching teams, under the direction of the inspection body, have written a detailed framework for the "3D construction" option."

Sylvain Pamart concludes by emphasizing the ongoing need for educational institutions to adapt and evolve. The collaboration with Constructions-3D is just the beginning, setting the stage for broader adoption of 3D printing technologies in the construction sector. By training the next generation of builders, Lycée François Mansart is not only preparing students for existing job markets but also shaping the future of the construction industry itself.

This progressive approach not only enhances the learning experience but also positions Lycée François Mansart as a leader in educational innovation, bridging the gap between traditional construction practices and cutting-edge technologies.
